From Mechanical Workshop to Art Studio: The Transformation of a Hidden Warehouse in Madrid. Nave Maravilla is a project by Día Uno Estudio located within an inner courtyard in a peripheral neighborhood of Madrid.
The starting point was a 1950s warehouse, characterized by a concrete structure with a pitched roof, typical of the industrial architecture of the era. The project's premise focused on enhancing the original construction while minimizing structural interventions.
Years of neglect had led to significant deterioration of the roof and the original flooring, making it necessary to repair all the surfaces. The structure was conceived as a white container that would maintain the existing elements and textures. The walls were painted after dampness treatment, respecting their original texture. For the floor, a continuous microcement pavement was chosen, generating a sense of fluidity and spatial unity that enhances the existing structure.
The interior transformation responded to the needs of its new owner, a multidisciplinary artist who required a hybrid space. The proposal was based on introducing, within the existing space, a freestanding element composed of birch wood and glass panels, strategically located in the center of the warehouse. This volume breaks with the orthogonal rigidity of the industrial container, introducing dynamism and articulating the space by separating the different functional areas. On one side, it houses the private studio, an intimate and luminous space for artistic creation. On the other side, a versatile and open space is generated, adaptable to various activities, where a white curtain offers the possibility of creating an isolated monochrome box for projections. The kitchen, an office area, the patio, and the service areas complete the program.
The aesthetic coherence of the project is achieved through the different finishes that run throughout the entire space, from the interior to the facade. Blue metalwork details, custom-designed birch furniture, and tiles act as guiding threads, generating unity and visual connection throughout the ensemble.
Nave Maravilla is conceived as a hidden gem behind the walls of a courtyard. Its transformation from a mechanical workshop to an art studio represents the potential of a respectful rehabilitation of industrial heritage. Text description by the architects.
